THE FRAME
A congressional watchdog went looking for the receipts behind a website called the Wall of Receipts, and could not find most of them. Accountability arrives after. Everything below runs faster than it does.

The Receipts Do Not Add Up
WHAT HAPPENED
GAO examined the $110 billion DOGE claims on its Wall of Receipts as of July 7 and found the estimates incorrect or unsupported. DOGE could not show how 96 percent of its grant savings were calculated. It booked $1.7 billion on a Defense Health Agency contract that was never terminated.
WHAT IT MEANS
DOGE published a number, the number justified the cuts, the cuts happened, and the arithmetic got checked afterwards. GAO found the agency did not use its own stated methodology for most of the contract savings it claimed. The published figure was never the output of the published method.
WHY IT MATTERS
GAO’s actual recommendation is that DOGE display its data-quality limitations prominently. That is what a watchdog can compel: a footnote on a claim that already did its work.

Three Point Two Billion, Then the Question
WHAT HAPPENED
Companies backed by 1789 Capital and American Ventures, the investment firms affiliated with Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, have taken $3.2 billion in federal contracts, loans and investments, plus $3.1 billion in future contract options. At least fifteen are in defence. Four members of Congress have asked the Defense Department Inspector General to review.
WHAT IT MEANS
The letter’s own phrasing does the work: “The potential for corruption is obvious.” Obvious, and after the fact. The money moved through ordinary contracting, the companies say they won on merit, and nothing in the sequence required anyone to break a rule.
WHY IT MATTERS
Watch the options, not the awards. $3.1 billion in future options is a claim on the next administration’s budget, priced today. Awards can be audited; options are a bet that the relationship outlasts the audit.

The Search Nobody Ran
WHAT HAPPENED
On day one of the Iran war, US forces struck a girls’ school in Minab, killing over 150 people, mostly children aged 7 to 12. The building had become a school in 2016, but the US targeting database was never updated, so Palantir’s Maven Smart System saw a military base. VICE reports Maven cost a reported $1.3 billion.
WHAT IT MEANS
The school was not a secret. VICE’s line is the one that matters: any human being could have found it with a two-minute Google search, but no human did, because the whole point of systems like Maven is to take humans out of the process. Palantir’s demo walks the workflow as “left click, right click, left click.” VICE calls what that resembles a Kanban board geared towards killing people.
WHY IT MATTERS
The tempo is the mechanism. 13,000 targets over 38 days is just over one strike every four minutes, and no verification step fits inside four minutes. Google built Maven first and its employees forced it out in 2018. Google has quietly re-entered, with Microsoft, OpenAI, Amazon and SpaceX.

Eight Months, Twice a Day
WHAT HAPPENED
Gabar Choli, a Kurdish film-maker, was force-fed over eight months in ICE detention in Texas while on hunger strike after his asylum claim was denied, often twice a day. He is speaking about it for the first time, from Canada, having been deported. Human rights groups widely consider the practice torture.
WHAT IT MEANS
Eight months is not an incident, it is a routine. Twice a day for eight months is a schedule, which means staffing, orders, and a supervisor who signed something. The account exists only because Choli is outside the system’s reach.
WHY IT MATTERS
This is the detention apparatus at the resolution where its numbers stop working. No line item, no receipt to audit. The record is a body and one man’s ability to describe what was done to it.

What to Watch
Whether the Wall of Receipts is amended at all — GAO asked for disclosure, not correction.
The $3.1 billion in options, not the $3.2 billion awarded — Options are a priced bet that the relationship outlives the audit.
Whether the DoD Inspector General opens a review — The first test of whether the request was process or press release.
Any 2026 revision to DoD Directive 3000.09 — Where a four-minute strike interval acquires a legal architecture, or keeps running without one.
Whether ICE answers the force-feeding account on the record — Choli could speak because he was deported. Silence establishes what happens to everyone still inside.
