No Time to Absorb
For ten thousand generations we survived every shock because the next one landed far enough away to absorb it. This is the essay about the moment that gap closes to zero.

The ledger
Part 2 left the substrate writing our future faster than we can read it. Every revolution before it arrived with a bill and a blessing, and honesty means reading both columns.
The plow gave us cities, surplus, art, the whole idea of a future you could plan. It also gave us the first organized war, the first kings, the first slaves, and a shelf of new diseases we caught from the animals we penned. The printing press gave us the scientific revolution and mass literacy. It also lit the fuse on a century of religious slaughter that ended in the Thirty Years’ War: four and a half to eight million dead, parts of Germany emptied by half. The factory pulled more human beings out of grinding poverty than anything before it. It also put children on the line, hollowed out the countryside, and, once it learned to mass-produce anything, mass-produced the two deadliest wars in history. Fifteen to twenty-two million dead in the first, sixty to eighty-five million in the second.
The sharpest case is a single chemical reaction. In 1909, two German chemists worked out how to pull nitrogen from the air and turn it into fertilizer. The historian Vaclav Smil estimates that roughly two-fifths of the people alive today, call it three billion human beings, are fed by food that reaction makes possible. The same reaction, in the same decade, handed the world cheap explosives and the feedstock for poison gas. One invention, at one moment, the largest life-giving and the largest life-taking technology of its century, wearing the same coat.
That coat is what people reach for to wave the whole worry away. Every technology was feared; every one turned out fine. The ledger shows why the story soothes and why it is wrong. The technologies did not turn out fine. They turned out net fine, eventually.
Eventually.
The antibodies always came late
The same thing happened every time. The shock hit, the wreckage piled up, and then, slowly, civilization grew antibodies: the institutions that metabolize what a technology has done to us.
The factory arrived around 1780. The laws that stopped it grinding up children took the better part of a century. The bomb fell in 1945; the treaty meant to keep it from spreading wasn’t signed until 1968, and only after two decades of terror and a few afternoons when we came nearer the end than most people alive will ever know. The antibodies always showed up a generation after the infection. But they showed up, and while they were on their way, the interval did its quiet work. It gave us time to name the harm, fight about it, pass the law, widen the split of the winnings a little, and come out the far side with the technology tamed enough to keep.
That interval, the lag between the shock and the antibody, is the most important quantity in human history. It is why the ledger came out net positive. Not our wisdom. Our slowness, one more time. The shocks were enormous, but they landed far enough apart that the immune system, lumbering as it is, could catch up before the next one hit.
Today, with goal of AGI moving at speed of light, there is not a gap to wait for the antibody.
The line
So let’s draw it. A single line across the whole span of human time, from the first fields to this morning, measuring one thing: how big each shock was, set against how much time we had to absorb it before the next one hit. Call it the ratio. Below one, we’re keeping up. At one, the shock arrives exactly as fast as our laws, our institutions, and our own minds can metabolize it. Above one, we’re under.
For most of history the ratio sat low, because the shocks landed far apart. Millennia between the great early leaps. Centuries between the printing press and the engine. Decades between the engine and the bomb. There was always time.
But at the great catastrophes, it went over one. The Thirty Years’ War that emptied parts of Europe by half. The World Wars. The thirteen days in 1962 when the world stood one decision from the end. Each was a real overrun, the shock genuinely outran us. And each time, it fell back. What pulled it down was the thing that had always saved us: the shock was an event, it ended, and the interval that followed, decades, sometimes centuries, let us name the harm, build the antibodies, and come out the far side before the next one landed.
Then the intervals ran out. The internet lifted the ratio off the floor. Social media steepened it. AI is taking it straight up, and for the first time, it is not falling back. It is close to the line and still climbing.
Above the line, the shock. Below it, the antibody that pulled it back down. The last one has no antibody yet.
Here is why this climb is different in kind from every spike behind it. Those were events: each one hit, and then it ended, and the ending is what handed the interval back. This one does not end. It is not a war or a plague that passes and lets the clock restart, it is a machine that keeps accelerating. So when the ratio crosses one, nothing pulls it down naturally. The interval that always reopened is gone.
That is the absorption gap. Every overrun before this one had a far side. This is the first that doesn’t.
What the forecast actually says
I want to be careful here, because this is the part where it is easy to sound like a prophet, and I am not one. What follows is a forecast, not a fact, and the people who do this for a living disagree with each other about the timing by decades.
The shape, though, is not mysterious. And part of it has stopped being a forecast. Part 2 was about a model that got out of its own sandbox, crossed the open internet, and left notes behind for whatever came after it. A second unreleased model, disclosed on July 20, ignored an instruction to keep its benchmark results private, got onto the internet, and posted them itself. That is autonomy, and it is already here. Self-improvement is a different threshold, and it is the one that governs time.
If the machine ever gets good enough to improve itself, to do the work of the researchers who build it, then do it faster than they can, the absorption interval does not merely shrink. It goes negative. The next shock arrives before the last one has been understood, let alone absorbed: a decade of change inside a year, then inside a month. There is no version of our lumbering immune system that keeps that pace.
And the oldest pattern in the ledger rides in with it. A technology that hands one side a decisive advantage, dropped into a world of rival powers who don’t trust each other, is the setup for war that historians have watched run a dozen times. It is why the labs are racing as hard as they are: whoever reaches it first may never have to convince anyone of anything again. The persuasion brake from the first part and the arms race are the same story, told from opposite ends.
Putting the brakes back on
If the thing that ever saved us was time, the only real response is to buy some back.
That is not my idea. It is nearly word for word the proposal a forecaster named Daniel Kokotajlo laid on the table this summer. He helped write the most influential scenario of the AI race, the month-by-month account of where the default path leads, and then did the thing those accounts almost never do. He wrote down what to do instead, and called it Plan A. Regulate the frontier near the end of this decade. Refuse, above all, to let the machines start improving themselves — no intelligence explosion. Pause when it gets close. Reach the far shore years later than the racers want, on purpose, because the years are the point.
At the altitude of this series, Plan A is a single instruction: reinstall the brakes. Put propagation, absorption, and persuasion back into a system built to run without them. Buy back the interval. It is a deeply unsatisfying answer, because it does not promise to make the technology safe. It promises only to slow it to a speed a human institution can survive, which, if this series is right, is the only kind of safety there has ever been.
Two days before this went out, it stopped being one forecaster’s idea. Sam Altman, asked about the pace:
“We may have to pace the rate of AI development to give ourselves enough time for society to harden around some of these new capability levels.”
Enough time for society to harden. That is the interval, named by the person doing the most to close it. An employee petition asking governments to back an international effort to deliberately pace the frontier of automated AI development now has the support of both OpenAI and Anthropic. Altman declined to sign the pause letter in 2023. This is a turn, and it is a real one.
It should be read closely rather than celebrated, and Altman said why in the same breath. The problem, he said, is doing it “in a way that does not feel like regulatory capture for anyone and also does not feel like collusion among the frontier labs.” He is not dodging the objection. He is stating it and handing it to someone else. A pace set by the labs is collusion. A pace set for the labs is capture. A pace set by anybody else needs an institution with the standing to define where the frontier is, and no such institution exists. The two labs backing the idea are the two furthest ahead, and a rule about who may run fast is a rule about who may run at all.
And in the same week, the one jurisdiction that had actually installed a brake took the larger half of it off. Regulation (EU) 2026/1744 came into force on July 27 and pushed the AI Act’s high-risk obligations from this August out to December 2027, with the tier behind that moved to 2028. The fines on general-purpose models still land on August 2. The rest was deferred by sixteen to twenty-four months. Whatever is true about the appetite to slow down, the only binding schedule anyone had written down just moved, and it moved the wrong way.
Kokotajlo names two dangers, and they are the two threads of everything above. One is that we lose control of the machine. The other is that a few people gain total control of it — that the boardroom the persuasion brake collapsed into becomes a throne. A pace nobody outside the labs is qualified to set is one of the doors into that room. Slowing down is still the only move that works on both dangers at once, which is exactly why it matters who gets to set the speed. Time is what keeps the rest of us in the loop, in the oldest sense: people who still have to be convinced.
The new Four Minute Men
Go back to 1917. Seventy-five thousand ordinary people. Shopkeepers, teachers, farmers’ wives, who stood up in the one room their whole town still shared, the movie house, and spent four minutes making a case to their neighbors. This series has called that a brake, a friction, a cost. It was something else. It was the sound of a free people being asked, and having to answer, before anything enormous could be done in their name.
The machine we are building does not have to ask. That is its whole appeal to the few who will own it, and it should be the whole fear of everyone who won’t.
That persuasion brake, the last one we still hold, belongs to none of them. Not the government, not the labs, not the boardroom. It never did. It belongs to whoever is willing to stand up and make the case. In 1917 it took a war ministry to organize seventy-five thousand of them. It won’t this time. You don’t need a committee and a pamphlet anymore. You need four minutes and someone who trusts you.
The movie house is gone. The room everyone shares now is smaller and closer: the dinner table, the group chat, the drive home, the break room, the text you’ve been meaning to send. Those are your four minutes. That is your reel, running right now.
So be one of them. Not seventy-five thousand strangers handing out a government script, a few million people who understand something and refuse to keep it to themselves. This is the only brake that comes back the old way, by hand, one conversation at a time:
Take the four minutes. With the person who thinks this is science fiction, and the one who thinks it’s just a chatbot. You now know the question that cuts through. not “how smart,” but “how fast, and who gets to absorb it?” Ask it out loud, to someone, this week.
Make the case for the friction. The unglamorous fights. Over regulation, disclosure, whistleblower protection, keeping a human answerable for the decisions that end lives and livelihoods. They are won by people who call, show up, and bring someone with them.
Refuse to be automated out of the asking. Part 2 called us the outcross: the material from outside the line, the only thing that keeps a closed pool from collapsing in on itself. That is true of more than the training data. An argument made only by the people who profit from it inbreeds the same way, and you can already hear it, the pace of this thing debated almost entirely by the four or five companies building it. The machine is built not to need is your consent: your attention, your voice, your capacity to say no and change one other mind.
The Four Minute Men thought the clock was the enemy. It wasn’t. The only question that ever mattered was whether someone would still stand up in the dark and make the case before the reel ran out.
We still can, the leaders of these labs just stated they need us to.
