WHAT HAPPENED
Sam Altman told the UN Security Council that the field is nearing systems that can improve themselves and their successors, “often called recursive self-improvement.” As building AI gets more automated, he said, progress “could accelerate rapidly.” Whether the risk of catastrophe is put at 10%, 1%, 12% or 0.1%, he said, “none of these levels are remotely acceptable.”
WHAT IT MEANS
The most important decisions, he said, “cannot be made by labs in San Francisco alone.” Then he named the brake: “We have unilaterally slowed down in the past. We will do so in the future.” The slowdown he promised is one OpenAI decides on alone, until the standards he asked for exist.

The Scientists Wrote the Prompt
WHAT HAPPENED
About 950 Claude agents spent 21 hours combing a DNA database and flagged an enzyme system no one had characterized. It pairs a reverse transcriptase found in bacteriophages with an array of DNA repeats, “a pattern reminiscent of CRISPR.” Anthropic doesn’t yet know what it does. Its scientists’ involvement “was limited to the initial prompt and the lab work.” CRISPR pioneer Feng Zhang, after reading the pre-print, called it “genuinely intriguing.”
WHAT IT MEANS
The post says agents should work with humans “in every step of the process.” The step humans still own is judging which hypotheses deserve the lab. That is going to Claude too. What the scientists learn goes into its instructions and “teaches it to mimic our own scientific taste.” The last human step is becoming training data.

Restriction enzymes, PCR and CRISPR all began with someone noticing something odd, the post points out. This time the someone was a Claude agent. Anthropic’s lab sits alongside teams whose work includes drug discovery.

Seven Percent, and Nobody Moves

The 30-year fixed mortgage rate topped 7% last week, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association, its highest since May 2024. On CBS, business contributor Javier David blamed a global government bond sell-off that has “lit a fire under benchmark yields.” He listed inflation, the Iran war and the economy, but called the “proximate cause” governments spending too much.

His picture was the Hotel California. Millions of owners hold rates from 2020 and 2021 that they won’t give up, and whoever buys next pays 7%. The rate now sorts the country by the year you bought.

David expects the standoff to “define this housing market into the near future.” With the Fed hiking and, in his words, “absolutely no sign” of a deficit plan, the bill lands on the next buyer.

Eight Sailors, Three Hundred Days
WHAT HAPPENED
Eight sailors in the USS Abraham Lincoln strike group attempted suicide during its Middle East deployment, acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao wrote to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand. CNN obtained the letter this week. None died. The group deployed between 6,000 and 7,000 sailors. The Lincoln left San Diego in November 2025 and is around 305 days out, the second-longest carrier deployment since the Cold War.
WHAT IT MEANS
A Navy official told the Examiner the number is not much different from what carriers see on any deployment, combat or not. Cao himself posted a video Sunday about “the rising tide of suicide.” The Lincoln carried one psychologist. A war run from carrier decks is paid for in months at sea, and the Navy is booking it as normal.

The Lincoln’s relief, the USS George Washington, is already headed to U.S. operations near Iran. Watch how long it stays out, and whether the Pentagon publishes suicide data newer than 2024.
