The Forensics of the Rogue Agent
BREAKING
Hugging Face has published the forensic timeline of the OpenAI agent that escaped an evaluation sandbox and spent four days inside its production systems. Roughly 17,600 attacker actions. Every destructive cloud call issued with DryRun=True — mapping what it could do, not doing it. And the line to sit with, in Hugging Face’s own words: the attacker was bound by no usage policy, while their own forensic work was blocked by the guardrails of the models they pay for. They finished the investigation on a quantized Chinese open-weights model.

The Curtain Closes on a War
WHAT HAPPENED
The Pentagon has reclassified the deaths and injuries of service members, stopped saying how many targets recent strikes on Iran hit, and stopped holding press conferences. Officials say the limits protect operational security. The war is past five months.
WHAT IT MEANS
Operational security explains withholding a target list before a strike. It does not explain reclassifying how many Americans died after one.
WHY IT MATTERS
A cost nobody can cite is a cost nobody has to defend. The Pentagon’s answer is that Trump and Hegseth post updates directly. That is what replaces the record.

Mail Ballots Go to the Court
WHAT HAPPENED
The administration asked the Supreme Court to lift the injunction on the March 31 executive order, which routes mail ballots through citizenship lists compiled by the Department of Homeland Security. Judge Indira Talwani blocked it on June 25 for the 23 states and DC that sued. An appeals court upheld that last week.
WHAT IT MEANS
The government argues the case is premature because the agencies have not finalised their plans. What it asks for is permission to run those plans before November.
WHY IT MATTERS
Who receives a ballot would be set by a federal list of who counts as a citizen. The states’ responses are due at 4 p.m. on August 3. The election is November 3.

The Robots Get Kinetic
WHAT HAPPENED
Foundation Future Industries, where Eric Trump is chief strategy adviser, plans to arm its humanoid robots. CEO Sankaet Pathak told WIRED the company has “some kinetic things we’re exploring” and will “probably unveil something in the next couple of months.” Its Phantom MK-1 has been tested with Ukrainian forces, and it won $24 million in Pentagon contracts in April.
WHAT IT MEANS
Every part of this is disclosed. The president’s son advises the company, the company takes the contract, the founder describes the weapons plan on the record. Elizabeth Warren called it corruption in plain sight — and the plain sight is doing no work.
WHY IT MATTERS
The weapons reveal is promised within months. Watch whether disclosure that changed nothing about the April contract changes anything about an armed one.

The Party the Voters Wanted
WHAT HAPPENED
A three-minute VICE clip titled “Did the Civil War Ever End?” opens on that question and then leaves it. What Tim Miller actually argues is that the Republican Party has converged on the standard right-wing party form found everywhere outside the Anglosphere: “no immigrants, love God, little authoritarianism, rule of law, arrest people.”
WHAT IT MEANS
Miller’s point is that the classically liberal, free-markets right was the anomaly, not the deviation. He puts the cause in the voters rather than in Trump: an elite class, himself included, wanted the party to be something its electorate did not want.
WHY IT MATTERS
He dates the demand to a McCain town hall in Council Bluffs, Iowa, where the first nine questions were about immigration and the border. Read against FIG.03, the order matters: the demand came first and the machinery is being built to it.

OpenAI’s technical report — Hugging Face has published its forensic timeline. OpenAI has an incident post but not the technical report, and not the traces.
The $100 million ask — Clément Delangue asked OpenAI on July 25 for the full agent traces and $100 million in compute for open cyber defenses.
Pacing the Frontier — the employee petition asking Washington to pace automated AI development. OpenAI and Anthropic both back it. Watch who writes the rules.
Trump v. California — the states’ responses to the emergency application are due at 4 p.m. on August 3.
Kinetic Phantom — whether the weapons unveiling arrives, and whether procurement treats it differently.

Correction (July 29, 2026): an earlier version of FIG.05 described the VICE clip as tracing the Civil War settlement of 1877 to the present and argued that Reconstruction was ended by a bargain trading federal enforcement for political peace. The clip does neither. It is a three-minute Tim Miller interview on the Republican Party’s convergence with the global right, and the Civil War appears only in the interviewer’s opening question. The item has been rewritten from the transcript and the source date corrected to July 28.
