WHAT HAPPENED
Anthropic released Claude Mythos 5.1 on September 1, restricted to its Project Glasswing partners, without pre-release access for the UK’s AI Security Institute. It’s the first time AISI has been left out of an Anthropic model evaluation. Anthropic hadn’t responded to requests for comment as of publication.
WHAT IT MEANS
The exclusion follows Trump-administration export controls already limiting foreign access to Anthropic’s most advanced models. Washington controls who gets the model, and now who checks it’s safe.
WHY IT MATTERS
UK officials worry this is the start of a pattern. Watch whether AISI gets access to the next release, or whether ally access quietly narrows to customer access.

The Database Two Courts Rejected
WHAT HAPPENED
DHS asked the Supreme Court to revive SAVE, its redesigned database adding Social Security numbers to citizenship checks on state voter rolls. A district judge blocked it in June; an appeals panel denied a stay last week, leaving the block in place. DHS says the system has verified more than 65 million voters across 26 states and flagged 28,635 as potential non-citizens.
WHAT IT MEANS
The Social Security Administration says its data isn’t a definitive citizenship record. In Utah and Texas, some flagged people turned out to be citizens. It repurposes a system built for welfare verification to reach voter rolls before the midterms.
WHY IT MATTERS
The Court has ordered the challengers to respond by September 15. Watch whether the justices rule on the merits or just grant an emergency stay. That difference decides whether SAVE runs in November.

Mass Polygraphs, Minimal Trust
WHAT HAPPENED
Pentagon investigators polygraphed dozens of senior officials, including Joint Staff and combatant-command officers, after reporters detailed how thin US weapons stockpiles have gotten during the Iran conflict. No one failed the leak-specific questions. Hegseth has already ousted or blocked promotions for at least 80 generals and admirals during his tenure.
WHAT IT MEANS
Sullivan’s read: the harder Hegseth flexes, the weaker he looks. The actual problem, thin missile and Patriot-interceptor stocks, came out anyway and stayed unfixed while officers got tested instead. That isn’t a security posture, it’s an admission nothing else worked.
WHY IT MATTERS
This is a first in modern US military history: the officer corps has never faced mass polygraphs before. Watch whether it chills the next officer who’d flag a real shortage.

Complexity Is the Business Model
WHAT HAPPENED
More Perfect Union found Deloitte holds at least $6 billion in state contracts to build Medicaid eligibility systems, including more than $400 million in Arkansas to manage the state’s benefits platform. Georgia’s Medicaid program spends more on administration than care, and a KFF-cited report found a contractor estimated 35 routine software changes would take over 100,000 hours. A Deloitte-managed system’s errors denied nearly 6,000 pregnant Texans coverage in 2023.
WHAT IT MEANS
The mechanism is direct: complexity is billable, so the contractor’s incentive runs opposite the applicant’s. The One Big Beautiful Bill’s new twice-yearly checks don’t shrink the system, they double the billing cycles. Equifax calls it a stated $4 billion opportunity, because every state buys the same data separately.
WHY IT MATTERS
Every ‘enhancement’ clause and each of the 55 state systems is a design choice, not an accident. Australia proved the alternative: pulling contractor work in-house, cutting spending by half a billion a year. Watch whether Warren’s inquiry produces a contract change, or just a hearing.
