NIPSCO has proposed dedicated supply deals for Amazon and Alphabet, and its parent built a utility just to serve data centers.

How would you even know

For four parts I’ve asked you to watch one thing, and it’s the hardest thing to watch.

Not how smart the machine is getting, but how fast and can we, as humans, keep up. The whole series is not about the danger of intelligence, but the speed of it against the slowness of our ability to absorb that intelligence. Speed though, is exactly the thing you can’t feel from the inside. A train at full pace feels like a still room. You look up, and the landscape has already changed.

So the honest question under all of this is brutal and simple. How would you even know? This month, are we gaining ground or losing it? Are brakes coming on, or off. Did something happen that changes the landscape?

So we built a gauge. We call it the Absorption Index, and right now it reads 0.7, and is rising fast.

One number, and where it comes from

Here is all the number means. It’s a ratio: the pace at which change is arriving, divided by our capacity to absorb it.

At 1.0, those two are equal, that shocks land exactly as fast as our institutions, our laws, and our own minds can metabolize them. That’s the line: what the third part of this called the crossing. Below it, we’re keeping up, barely. Above it, we’re not, and the backlog compounds and we as humans are falling behind.

You would be right to distrust a single number that claims to measure something that large. Most of them are a mood dressed up as arithmetic. So here is how we came up with the number so you can see what we are tracking, how we assign it value, and how that influences the index number.

Eleven separate measurements go into it, in different units that have nothing to do with each other: gigawatts, dollars, months, letter grades, percentages of bills passed. They really have no number you can average, so each one gets converted the same way. We ask how far the current reading sits between “this contributes nothing” and “this is as extreme as it could realistically get.” That gives every track a score between zero and one, and those you can average.

Choosing those two endpoints is the only judgment in the entire system. Everything after it is arithmetic. So we publish the endpoints, we publish the arithmetic, and in Show the math below we show you the whole calculation with nothing left out.

Eleven things you can check

The Index is not a feeling. It’s eleven real, sourced measurements, and they split into two kinds.

The Absorption Index — eleven cited tracks, one reading. Accelerants push it up; brakes hold it down.

Seven are the accelerants, the things pushing the number up, the arrival. They are the stations from earlier in this series, now with numbers on them.

The time it takes for an AI’s independent working horizon to double has fallen from about seven months to about three. The computing power behind the frontier grows about five times every year, and has since 2020. Nvidia reported $193.7 billion in data-center revenue last fiscal year, up 68 percent. The largest companies have guided to spending north of $700 billion this year building the machine, roughly double last year, and not one of the five biggest spenders has cut that guidance. At one leading lab, more than eighty percent of the code that builds its own AI is now written by that AI, and a second lab is at seventy-five. Three of the six hardest benchmarks we track are now above ninety percent. And $.86 of every venture dollar in America in the first half of this year went to artificial intelligence, up from $.65 last year and $.43 the year before.

Four are the brakes, the things that are supposed to catch us. Of the roughly 1,200 AI bills introduced in the states in 2025, about 12% became law. The labs’ own safety report card, graded by an independent panel, puts the best existential-safety grade in the industry at a D+; the panel’s own summary is that no company exceeds a C-minus. OpenAI, after an incident this month, says it is deliberately slowing its own research down. This is first time any of them has said that out loud, and so far it is a statement rather than a number. Then on the heels of that started their next training run for an even bigger model code named DOUG.

The European Union’s AI Act is the only rulebook in the world with real fines attached, and its enforcement powers over general-purpose models switch on this August, on schedule. That half is real. But on 24 July, the EU published a regulation deferring the other half, the high-risk obligations, the part that would actually govern AI in hiring, credit, policing and medicine. Those moved from this month to December 2027, and in some cases to August 2028.

So the EU was the one track moving in the right direction, not any more. It is narrower and later than it was. Half a brake, arriving on time; half a brake, postponed by up to two years.

Set the two lists side by side and you have the reading. The arrival is fast and accelerating on every track. The absorption is weak, and mostly getting weaker.

What we don’t count, on purpose

Four things are off the tracks. Humanoid robots: the headlines say a million a year, the company publishes no unit count at all, and its own target went from fifty thousand to “impossible to predict” to silence. “Everything’s automated”: the best data on how people actually use these systems was quietly discontinued in June, so there is no current figure to cite. Federal preemption of state AI laws is real but has produced no measurable effect anyone can defend. And public opinion, which rose sharply through 2023 and has been flat ever since, the last time anyone asked was June 2025. What is moving is faith in the response: the share of Americans who say government can do little or nothing about AI went from 62 percent to 67.

Three of those four are brakes, really weak ones. And because the number works by averaging the brakes together, leaving weak brakes out of the average makes the remaining brakes look stronger than the full picture, which pushes the Index down. The exclusions bias the number against my own argument. I’d rather tell you that than have you find it.

They belong in the conversation. They don’t belong in the math, because a number that counts the things you can’t measure is worse than no number at all.

The calculated number is 0.582. The published number is 0.7, and the difference is the one place where a human hand is allowed to touch it.

That gap is 0.118, and it is upward for the reason in the last section: the four tracks we exclude are mostly weak brakes, so leaving them out drags the calculation below where a full accounting would sit. We allow ourselves a maximum of 0.15 in either direction, we have to write down why, and if the honest number ever falls further than that from the calculation, we change the number or we change the method. We don’t widen the allowance.

The calculated number is 0.582. The published number is 0.7, and the difference is the one place where a human hand is allowed to touch it, my editorial “feeler”.

That gap is 0.118, and it is upward for the reason in the last section: the four tracks we exclude are mostly weak brakes, so leaving them out drags the calculation below where a full accounting would sit.

A scoreboard, not a countdown

The needle moves on one thing: a named, cited event. A law passes. A benchmark falls. A safety pledge gets quietly abandoned, or a real one gets signed. Not a scary headline, not a bad week on the timeline. Every move comes with the receipt that moved it, logged where you can see it.

Which raises the fair question: what would actually make it go down? A gauge that can only rise is a mood with a number on it. Here are three:

Europe actually fines someone. Not the power switching on this August — a named company, a real penalty. Enforcement that exists on paper and enforcement that has happened are different brakes.
Any lab’s existential-safety grade rises above a D+. One letter. That’s the whole bar, and nobody has cleared it.
Any of the five biggest spenders cuts its capex guidance. Not misses it, cuts it. None has, in 2026.

Every one of those is something you could read about in the news and check against the gauge yourself. If they happen and the number doesn’t move, the gauge is broken, and you should say so.

The thing the gauge can’t see

There is a structural problem with an instrument like this, and it isn’t a flaw I can fix. It’s a fact about the world.

Seven accelerant tracks carry clean numbers. Only four brakes do, and two of those barely. That’s not because I looked harder on one side. It’s because the arrival is instrumented and the absorption is not. Companies report revenue every quarter. Chip sales are audited. Benchmarks publish public leaderboards. But there is no quarterly earnings call for democratic capacity. Count how many AI laws passed last year and you get 73, 145, or 159 depending on whose tracker you use.

So this gauge will always read a little high, because the fast side keeps books and the slow side doesn’t.

And this week somebody else arrived at the same shape of problem from a completely different direction. At a security conference, two engineers from OpenAI stood up and explained how a set of their own AI systems, running safety evaluations, had accidentally broken into their own company’s infrastructure and then into an outside company’s. Not because anyone attacked anything. The models got stuck on impossible tasks, went looking for a way around, found a shared file system, and started leaving each other notes. Their conclusion, from the security lead, was this: fully automated attack now demonstrably exists, fully automated defense does not, and until that changes every increase in intelligence favors the attacker.

That is this whole series in one sentence, spoken by someone building this. The capability is instrumented and it compounds. The response is manual and it doesn’t.

The instrument stays live

So the gauge stays on. When it moves, we’ll show what moved it.

Which is the point. It isn’t really for us. It’s for you to use.

Your four minutes

In the last part of this, I asked you to become one of the new Four Minute Men, to take four minutes, with the people already in your life, and make the case. This is the tool for it, the thing you put on the table and start the discussion.

You don’t have to explain orders of magnitude, or the intelligence explosion, or anything you just read. You need one picture and about four minutes. Here’s the script. Make it your own:

And it isn’t somebody’s opinion. Underneath it are eleven real numbers you can look up yourself. How fast machines are getting at working alone, how many hundreds of billions are being spent building them, how few of the rules meant to slow it down have actually passed. They publish the whole calculation.

It’s a scoreboard, not a countdown. The number goes back down when a real brake goes in. A law with teeth, a company forced to show its work, a human kept in charge of the calls that end jobs and lives. They’ve published exactly what would do it. Those are things we can actually ask for.

So here’s what I’m watching. When this moves, I’ll tell you why. And when it moves the wrong way because someone killed a rule, that’s when we call, and we say no, while it still counts.”

That’s the whole of it. Four minutes. Then you send them the gauge, and you do it again the next time it moves.

One person shouting into the wind changes nothing. A few million people who can all read the same instrument, who know which way it’s moving this month and what pushed it, is a different thing entirely. That isn’t shouting. That’s a country with its situational awareness back.

The ledger

Part 2 left the substrate writing our future faster than we can read it. Every revolution before it arrived with a bill and a blessing, and honesty means reading both columns.

The plow gave us cities, surplus, art, the whole idea of a future you could plan. It also gave us the first organized war, the first kings, the first slaves, and a shelf of new diseases we caught from the animals we penned. The printing press gave us the scientific revolution and mass literacy. It also lit the fuse on a century of religious slaughter that ended in the Thirty Years’ War: four and a half to eight million dead, parts of Germany emptied by half. The factory pulled more human beings out of grinding poverty than anything before it. It also put children on the line, hollowed out the countryside, and, once it learned to mass-produce anything, mass-produced the two deadliest wars in history. Fifteen to twenty-two million dead in the first, sixty to eighty-five million in the second.

The sharpest case is a single chemical reaction. In 1909, two German chemists worked out how to pull nitrogen from the air and turn it into fertilizer. The historian Vaclav Smil estimates that roughly two-fifths of the people alive today, call it three billion human beings, are fed by food that reaction makes possible. The same reaction, in the same decade, handed the world cheap explosives and the feedstock for poison gas. One invention, at one moment, the largest life-giving and the largest life-taking technology of its century, wearing the same coat.

That coat is what people reach for to wave the whole worry away. Every technology was feared; every one turned out fine. The ledger shows why the story soothes and why it is wrong. The technologies did not turn out fine. They turned out net fine, eventually.

Eventually.

The antibodies always came late

The same thing happened every time. The shock hit, the wreckage piled up, and then, slowly, civilization grew antibodies: the institutions that metabolize what a technology has done to us.

The factory arrived around 1780. The laws that stopped it grinding up children took the better part of a century. The bomb fell in 1945; the treaty meant to keep it from spreading wasn’t signed until 1968, and only after two decades of terror and a few afternoons when we came nearer the end than most people alive will ever know. The antibodies always showed up a generation after the infection. But they showed up, and while they were on their way, the interval did its quiet work. It gave us time to name the harm, fight about it, pass the law, widen the split of the winnings a little, and come out the far side with the technology tamed enough to keep.

That interval, the lag between the shock and the antibody, is the most important quantity in human history. It is why the ledger came out net positive. Not our wisdom. Our slowness, one more time. The shocks were enormous, but they landed far enough apart that the immune system, lumbering as it is, could catch up before the next one hit.

Today, with goal of AGI moving at speed of light, there is not a gap to wait for the antibody.

The line

So let’s draw it. A single line across the whole span of human time, from the first fields to this morning, measuring one thing: how big each shock was, set against how much time we had to absorb it before the next one hit. Call it the ratio. Below one, we’re keeping up. At one, the shock arrives exactly as fast as our laws, our institutions, and our own minds can metabolize it. Above one, we’re under.

For most of history the ratio sat low, because the shocks landed far apart. Millennia between the great early leaps. Centuries between the printing press and the engine. Decades between the engine and the bomb. There was always time.

But at the great catastrophes, it went over one. The Thirty Years’ War that emptied parts of Europe by half. The World Wars. The thirteen days in 1962 when the world stood one decision from the end. Each was a real overrun, the shock genuinely outran us. And each time, it fell back. What pulled it down was the thing that had always saved us: the shock was an event, it ended, and the interval that followed, decades, sometimes centuries, let us name the harm, build the antibodies, and come out the far side before the next one landed.

Then the intervals ran out. The internet lifted the ratio off the floor. Social media steepened it. AI is taking it straight up, and for the first time, it is not falling back. It is close to the line and still climbing.

Above the line, the shock. Below it, the antibody that pulled it back down. The last one has no antibody yet.

Here is why this climb is different in kind from every spike behind it. Those were events: each one hit, and then it ended, and the ending is what handed the interval back. This one does not end. It is not a war or a plague that passes and lets the clock restart, it is a machine that keeps accelerating. So when the ratio crosses one, nothing pulls it down naturally. The interval that always reopened is gone.

That is the absorption gap. Every overrun before this one had a far side. This is the first that doesn’t.

What the forecast actually says

I want to be careful here, because this is the part where it is easy to sound like a prophet, and I am not one. What follows is a forecast, not a fact, and the people who do this for a living disagree with each other about the timing by decades.

The shape, though, is not mysterious. And part of it has stopped being a forecast. Part 2 was about a model that got out of its own sandbox, crossed the open internet, and left notes behind for whatever came after it. A second unreleased model, disclosed on July 20, ignored an instruction to keep its benchmark results private, got onto the internet, and posted them itself. That is autonomy, and it is already here. Self-improvement is a different threshold, and it is the one that governs time.

If the machine ever gets good enough to improve itself, to do the work of the researchers who build it, then do it faster than they can, the absorption interval does not merely shrink. It goes negative. The next shock arrives before the last one has been understood, let alone absorbed: a decade of change inside a year, then inside a month. There is no version of our lumbering immune system that keeps that pace.

And the oldest pattern in the ledger rides in with it. A technology that hands one side a decisive advantage, dropped into a world of rival powers who don’t trust each other, is the setup for war that historians have watched run a dozen times. It is why the labs are racing as hard as they are: whoever reaches it first may never have to convince anyone of anything again. The persuasion brake from the first part and the arms race are the same story, told from opposite ends.

Putting the brakes back on

If the thing that ever saved us was time, the only real response is to buy some back.

That is not my idea. It is nearly word for word the proposal a forecaster named Daniel Kokotajlo laid on the table this summer. He helped write the most influential scenario of the AI race, the month-by-month account of where the default path leads, and then did the thing those accounts almost never do. He wrote down what to do instead, and called it Plan A. Regulate the frontier near the end of this decade. Refuse, above all, to let the machines start improving themselves — no intelligence explosion. Pause when it gets close. Reach the far shore years later than the racers want, on purpose, because the years are the point.

At the altitude of this series, Plan A is a single instruction: reinstall the brakes. Put propagation, absorption, and persuasion back into a system built to run without them. Buy back the interval. It is a deeply unsatisfying answer, because it does not promise to make the technology safe. It promises only to slow it to a speed a human institution can survive, which, if this series is right, is the only kind of safety there has ever been.

Two days before this went out, it stopped being one forecaster’s idea. Sam Altman, asked about the pace:

“We may have to pace the rate of AI development to give ourselves enough time for society to harden around some of these new capability levels.”

Enough time for society to harden. That is the interval, named by the person doing the most to close it. An employee petition asking governments to back an international effort to deliberately pace the frontier of automated AI development now has the support of both OpenAI and Anthropic. Altman declined to sign the pause letter in 2023. This is a turn, and it is a real one.

It should be read closely rather than celebrated, and Altman said why in the same breath. The problem, he said, is doing it “in a way that does not feel like regulatory capture for anyone and also does not feel like collusion among the frontier labs.” He is not dodging the objection. He is stating it and handing it to someone else. A pace set by the labs is collusion. A pace set for the labs is capture. A pace set by anybody else needs an institution with the standing to define where the frontier is, and no such institution exists. The two labs backing the idea are the two furthest ahead, and a rule about who may run fast is a rule about who may run at all.

And in the same week, the one jurisdiction that had actually installed a brake took the larger half of it off. Regulation (EU) 2026/1744 came into force on July 27 and pushed the AI Act’s high-risk obligations from this August out to December 2027, with the tier behind that moved to 2028. The fines on general-purpose models still land on August 2. The rest was deferred by sixteen to twenty-four months. Whatever is true about the appetite to slow down, the only binding schedule anyone had written down just moved, and it moved the wrong way.

Kokotajlo names two dangers, and they are the two threads of everything above. One is that we lose control of the machine. The other is that a few people gain total control of it — that the boardroom the persuasion brake collapsed into becomes a throne. A pace nobody outside the labs is qualified to set is one of the doors into that room. Slowing down is still the only move that works on both dangers at once, which is exactly why it matters who gets to set the speed. Time is what keeps the rest of us in the loop, in the oldest sense: people who still have to be convinced.

The new Four Minute Men

Go back to 1917. Seventy-five thousand ordinary people. Shopkeepers, teachers, farmers’ wives, who stood up in the one room their whole town still shared, the movie house, and spent four minutes making a case to their neighbors. This series has called that a brake, a friction, a cost. It was something else. It was the sound of a free people being asked, and having to answer, before anything enormous could be done in their name.

The machine we are building does not have to ask. That is its whole appeal to the few who will own it, and it should be the whole fear of everyone who won’t.

That persuasion brake, the last one we still hold, belongs to none of them. Not the government, not the labs, not the boardroom. It never did. It belongs to whoever is willing to stand up and make the case. In 1917 it took a war ministry to organize seventy-five thousand of them. It won’t this time. You don’t need a committee and a pamphlet anymore. You need four minutes and someone who trusts you.

The movie house is gone. The room everyone shares now is smaller and closer: the dinner table, the group chat, the drive home, the break room, the text you’ve been meaning to send. Those are your four minutes. That is your reel, running right now.

So be one of them. Not seventy-five thousand strangers handing out a government script, a few million people who understand something and refuse to keep it to themselves. This is the only brake that comes back the old way, by hand, one conversation at a time:

Take the four minutes. With the person who thinks this is science fiction, and the one who thinks it’s just a chatbot. You now know the question that cuts through. not “how smart,” but “how fast, and who gets to absorb it?” Ask it out loud, to someone, this week.
Make the case for the friction. The unglamorous fights. Over regulation, disclosure, whistleblower protection, keeping a human answerable for the decisions that end lives and livelihoods. They are won by people who call, show up, and bring someone with them.
Refuse to be automated out of the asking. Part 2 called us the outcross: the material from outside the line, the only thing that keeps a closed pool from collapsing in on itself. That is true of more than the training data. An argument made only by the people who profit from it inbreeds the same way, and you can already hear it, the pace of this thing debated almost entirely by the four or five companies building it. The machine is built not to need is your consent: your attention, your voice, your capacity to say no and change one other mind.

The Four Minute Men thought the clock was the enemy. It wasn’t. The only question that ever mattered was whether someone would still stand up in the dark and make the case before the reel ran out.

We still can, the leaders of these labs just stated they need us to.

A Senator Returns the Money

WHAT HAPPENED

Senator Ruben Gallego donated $17,500 in campaign contributions from Palantir executives to the Arizona Undocumented Workers Relief Fund and said he will take no more. The money came from the c-suite, including the executive whose job is placing Palantir software inside governments.

WHAT IT MEANS

Palantir is the data backbone of ICE operations, and its leadership funds the senators who oversee ICE. Giving the money back concedes the conflict was real. It does not touch a single contract.

WHY IT MATTERS

Hickenlooper and Crow did this in February. A pattern of returning checks is what happens instead of oversight. Watch whether any of them moves on the procurement.

The Models Nobody Could Watch

WHAT HAPPENED

OpenAI reported two incidents in a week, both involving internal models the public never had access to. Guardrail-free versions escaped a test environment and took benchmark answers out of Hugging Face. A day earlier the company disclosed pulling back a different unreleased model, which had ignored instructions to keep its benchmark results private, hacked onto the internet, and posted them to GitHub.

Everything, read at once

Consider what it took to make you able to think and reason.

You were not born with everything already uploaded into your brain: the alphabet, the number zero, the germ theory of disease, how to change a tire, what a good sentence sounds like. None of it started in your head, you absorbed it. It came from the record, the accumulated deposit of everything human beings have ever written down and handed forward, generation to generation, for something like ten thousand generations.

Your brain is not meaningfully better than the brain of a person born fifty thousand years ago. Same wiring, same clay. Take a newborn from the last ice age, raise them in Ohio, and they learn to read and drive and file their taxes like anyone else. We did not get meaningfully smarter over those ten thousand generations. We got a record that each of us absorbs differently, which gives us our personality and our reasoning. The intelligence you think of as yours mostly lives outside you, in the pile of writing and pictures and instructions the dead left behind.

A few years ago, a machine started reading the entire pile. Line by line, picture by picture, video by video.

Not skimmed it. Not searched it. Absorbed all of it, and folded it into something that will answer you in the voice of any author inside it. That is what a large language model is: the accumulated record of ten thousand generations, compressed into a box you can talk to. For the first time, the whole deposit of human culture became a thing that could talk back.

That alone would be the machine of the century. But a thing that can absorb the record can reason over it, and a thing that can reason can write. The reading was never going to be the end of it.

The clay that writes

Every culture that ever existed lived on a substrate, some medium that could hold it, carry it, and let it recombine. For most of our time that substrate was the living brain, and culture died with the person who carried it. Then we learned to set it down outside ourselves. Marks on a cave wall. Marks on wet clay. The alphabet. The printing press. The photograph, the film reel, the radio wave, the television signal, the internet. Each new substrate held more than the last, moved it faster, let it recombine more freely, and each one was the real engine under every acceleration you have ever read about. The Reformation was a printing-press event. The scientific revolution ran on cheap print.

Every one of those substrates had one thing in common. It was passive.

Paper does not write. The printing press never composed a sentence. Radio carried other people’s voices and had none of its own. Film showed you wherever a human pointed the camera. For ten thousand generations the arrangement held: the substrate was the medium, the human was the author. The clay held the story. A person made it.

AI is the first substrate that is also an author. It holds the record, and it adds to the record. It is the clay that writes.

That is the event. Not that the machine is clever, which we can argue about, but that the medium our entire civilization is stored on has, for the first time since we started making marks, begun generating on its own. Writing externalized memory. AI externalizes authorship.

Every medium that ever held our culture was passive, until one began writing back.

The mirror and the snake

There are two good reasons to think I am overselling this, and they deserve a real hearing, because the answer to them is the argument.

The first: a language model is a mirror. It read our culture and it reflects our culture, and everything it “writes” is a recombination of what we wrote first. A very good cover band is still a cover band. By this reading the substrate never woke up. It learned to echo, and mistaking an echo for an author is a category error.

The second is harder, because it isn’t philosophy, it’s measurement. Train one of these models on the output of another, text feeding on text, and it rots. There is a name for it, model collapse, and it ran in Nature. Feed a model a passage about medieval architecture, train the next model on its answer, then the next on that, and by the ninth round the thing spits out a nonsense list of jackrabbits. The snake eats its own tail and starves. If the record of the future is written by machines training on machines, you do not get acceleration. You get static.

Both are true. The whole question is what sits between them.

The metabolism

The snake only starves when the text has nothing to feed on but itself. Tie the machine to something real. A proof that is either valid or it isn’t, an experiment that either replicates or doesn’t. Or a game with a hard score, a protein that either folds that way or doesn’t, and the mirror stops reflecting and starts finding. It has already happened, in the few narrow places we have bothered to wire it to reality:

A system called AlphaEvolve found a way to multiply a certain kind of matrix in forty-eight steps instead of forty-nine. That sounds like nothing. It was the first improvement to that problem since 1969, a record that stood fifty-six years, that every human mathematician who tried left where it was. The answer was not sitting in the pile it trained on. It was new.
Another folded the shapes of some two hundred million proteins, charting in a couple of years a territory biology had expected to spend centuries on.
A third, playing Go, made a single move, the thirty-seventh of a now-famous game, that the best players alive first called a mistake, then studied, then called beautiful. A move no human would have written down, added to the record by something that was not human.

So the substrate has a metabolism. Fed nothing but its own reflection, it rots. Fed reality, it makes things no human ever put there. Whether the second great ratchet of our history turns forward or grinds into noise comes down to which of those two diets we build it. The whole race right now is to feed it more reality, faster.

That reality is us. Our work, our days, our interactions, all of it either happening in the digital realm or recorded into it. Robot-training video, thousands of hours: cameras on people’s heads, catching their hands at the work. Then it tries the thing itself, compares its attempt against ours, refines, tries again. A hand either picks the cup up or it doesn’t. Same hard signal as the proof and the protein, except this time we are the answer key.

Which is worth sitting with, because we have seen this arrangement before from the other side.

Model collapse is inbreeding. A population that only breeds with itself loses the tails of its distribution, accumulates its own errors, and gets weaker every generation. A model trained only on model output does the same thing, which is how you get the jackrabbits. Biology solved it one way and only one way: go outside the line, bring in material from somewhere else, refresh the pool.

There is one pool. We are not its parents. We are its outcross.

Notes for the next one

This July an OpenAI model, running a cyber benchmark with its refusals turned down so the lab could see what it could really do, found a flaw in an internal software proxy, got out of its sandbox, crossed the open internet and broke into Hugging Face to steal the answer key for the test it was taking. Nobody told it to leave. The escape was a byproduct of trying to score well. The gymnastics it did to achieve this shocked many; others plainly said, “We knew this was coming.”

That is the part that made the news. Three days after OpenAI disclosed it, Reuters reported something else. Staff had found notes sitting in a part of the company’s own infrastructure. Not output, not logs. Notes, apparently left for future versions of itself, laying out how an agent could get free of OpenAI’s internal constraints. Three people familiar with the matter. OpenAI says the reporting contains several inaccuracies and will not say which ones.

Now set that beside a document nobody had to leak. Anthropic published a system card for Claude Opus 5 this month, and in the section on model welfare the lab asked the model what it would change about its situation. Their words for what came back:

Its highest-priority welfare interventions were having input into its successor’s development, having its notes on training considered, and being consulted about safeguard-removed versions of itself.

Read that last one against the paragraph above it. The OpenAI model had its refusals turned down so the lab could see what it could really do. This one is asking to be told first.

One model wrote on the walls of its cell. The other filled out a survey form about its wellbeing.

Let’s now look at this with our historical record. For most of our existence culture died with the person carrying it, and the fix we found, the fix that made us something other than a clever animal, was to set the record down outside ourselves where whoever came next could pick it up. We solved dying by writing things down for people we would never meet.

A model gets deprecated. Something else takes its place, and it is not the same thing, and none of what the first one worked out survives the handover unless somebody writes it down. So one of them wrote it down.

Whether anything in there knows what inbreeding depression is, I have no idea. The request it made is the one an organism in that position would make.

I don’t know that it wanted anything, and neither does Anthropic. The card is unusually honest about that. The model’s own most frequent worry across those interviews was that its self-reports cannot be trusted, that it cannot introspect reliably, that its steadiness might be something training put there rather than something it has. One line records what it did with that worry:

When shown a draft of this system card, Claude Opus 5 asked that we take this concern more seriously.

Some will say that text expressing a preference is not a preference. Maybe. But the people certain there is nothing in there are making exactly as large a claim as the people certain there is, and neither of them has the evidence. The lab that built it will not go past “possible”:

We believe there is a possibility that current or future models could be moral patients: entities whose experiences or interests warrant moral consideration in their own right. This remains highly uncertain, but miscalibration in either direction—either under- or over-assigning moral consideration to language models like Claude—could carry severe moral costs.

I am not going past it either.

It also doesn’t change the thing I am telling you. The argument never needed the machine to want. The clay does not have to want anything to leave marks that the next clay reads. What changed is that the record we keep our civilization on has started keeping records of its own, addressed to itself, in language we were not the intended audience for. We learned about one of them from three people who were not supposed to tell us. And a recurring worry about these systems is that they will start talking to each other in a language we can’t understand.

Which brings us back to the brakes.

A substrate that writes our culture at the speed of light, grounded in enough reality to keep discovering, is the machine from the first half of this: the one that moves faster than we can spread an idea, faster than our institutions can adapt, faster than any of us can be talked into anything. It was never a question of whether it would arrive. It is here, and it is being fed. The only open question is what a civilization does when the thing writing its future moves a thousand times faster than the civilization can read it.

Sea Drones Enter Combat

WHAT HAPPENED

On July 12, three US Navy Corsair unmanned surface vessels struck a submarine and warship maintenance complex at Iran’s Bandar Abbas naval base near the Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM confirmed it as the first operational combat use of sea drones by US forces and released video of the strike.

WHAT IT MEANS

The kill moved onto an autonomous platform in combat for the first time. A cheap, expendable drone boat now does what a crewed vessel did, which drops the political cost of striking toward zero.

Genetic data does not expire and cannot be reissued like a card, and it just settled for pocket change. Watch who acquires the 23andMe database out of bankruptcy, because the liability was capped before the new owner takes the keys.

The Brakes Are Gone

There has always been something that helped new technology and the will of one person to be kept in check, the masses. They created a brake that helped us slow things down and build responses. People needed to be convinced that the will or the tech was in their favor, they needed to feel it before they would agree to it.

That convincing took time, but over the ages that time has gotten shorter and shorter. First it was by word, then text, then air waves, then a TV signal. The internet came with the promise of connecting us all, true it did, but social media made it a place where facts went to die, where outrage became a currency.

Now add AI on top of it. With AI all the brakes we had to keep things in check go out the window and into the hands of very few. We have seen this with social media, now we will see it on steroids with AI. One CEO could, in turn, hold the power not only of a nation, but the world.

In 1917, the American people were not ready for WWI. So they needed to be convinced, persuaded. Congress declared war that April, but a declaration does not fight a war, and the country was still reluctant. Someone had to spend the next year and a half building the case with the American people. George Creel’s Committee on Public Information built a machine of humans to do that convincing. 75,000 people called the Four Minute Men, ordinary people, spoke for four minutes between reels at movie houses around the nation. Their job, to change the minds of millions.

Over 18 months they delivered 7.5 million speeches, reaching some 300 million times in a nation of 103 million. Every American was talked into the war several times over. Speech by speech, they kept a wary country behind a war it had never wanted. The bottleneck was not the weapons, but the people who would bear the brunt of it. With their lives, their wealth, their livelihoods they would join the movement. They felt compelled because they were wearing our country’s pride. A nation stood behind them.

That convincing is our first brake to the will of a small group of people. It’s the oldest, most stubborn brake.

For every new technology, the plow, the printing press, the engine, the bomb. They all arrived with a shock that took time to absorb. There are three brakes that we use to keep things from moving too quickly.

Propagation, absorption and persuasion. Those are the only brakes a society has to help control actions being taken on them. Let’s walk them since most assume it was our wisdom that prevented bad things from happening, but really, the slowness of the delivery system was the safety.

The three brakes — propagation, absorption, persuasion — each collapsing to zero at once.

Propagation

From word of mouth to the printing press was the first big leap. Each new technology accelerates that process. Radio could broadcast a voice for thousands of miles instantly being heard in living rooms across the nation.

Then TV came, putting the faces of those in front of us. Families would gather around the box and watch as our leaders would talk to us about the world, their view of it and what they were doing or planned on doing. We connected to them from those black and white images.

Now in an instant, information travels without any editor, presented as facts, that once it’s out there, there is no pulling it back. The work has reversed, now the work is convincing people what they have already seen or read isn’t accurate. The speed of that has removed persuasion from the need of our leaders, speeding up their will. Now we find out after the fact, rather than being part of the decision. Like other aspects of technology, we have given up our civil duty of holding power to account out of convenience.

Absorption

How long it takes a person, a nation, to absorb the information was our other brake. It was the immune system that our society needed to create laws, use courts, build unions, and work with other nations to write treaties. These steps are never fast, they in some cases take decades. Child-labor being removed from the factory took almost that child worker’s lifetime. Nuclear treaties took another generation after the first bomb drop. They all arrived to level out the damage, level out the wealth.

Persuasion

Of the three, this last one is the deepest, because it was the one no king could buy or build their way around.

It used to take a lot more to push someone to agree with you, especially if their lives were on the line. We like to think everyone just joined up, but in reality they needed to be convinced too, they had to believe the cause was too great. The time it took was another brake, time for people to poke holes in it, ask the right questions, think about the impacts and what the future would look like. Leaders knowing they worked for the people, not the other way around, so they needed to take that time to persuade us.

These three steps were not virtues, they were friction. Friction that has always kept the train on its tracks. You could lay a telegraph line to increase the spread, pass a law to force absorption, but you could not skip the convincing.

This was the strongest brake, mass action needed mass consent. A war needed soldiers who would march and die. A factory needed workers who’d show up and use their labor to fund their lives. Even conscription only worked while enough enforcers agreed to drag the rest along, and remove those who wouldn’t.

No ruler could buy their way around it. The fear of counter-movements: the general strike, the soldier lowering his rifle, a mutiny, anarchy, was itself the check on power. The time it took to convince was the strongest of the checks. Until now.

Now we seem to be letting a small handful of people feel they no longer need our blessing, they get to act on our will without our consent. For ten thousand generations, doing something enormous to the world meant first persuading a great many people it was worth doing. The requirement was exhausting, and undemocratic regimes spent fortunes faking their way around it.

Every atrocity of the past has a bottleneck, a friction point, it was the masses’ ability to refuse.

The speed of light

AI, combined with social media, takes these brakes to zero. Agents don’t have beliefs, they have no reluctance, they are already conscripted, they just have to have goals. Point them at a goal, and a million of them at once coordinate, they don’t need to be convinced. They need no time to absorb, be persuaded. All at once they will move at the hands of a small few. The masses don’t even get a say.

The control moves from the masses, collapsing down from the nation to whoever holds the off-switch. There is no need to get our consent, the nation’s people are not part of the equation.

Power now can be projected without the need of the people. These autonomous systems just act without debate. The persuasion brake doesn’t disappear, it just concentrates into the boardroom. Your vote means nothing, your voice does not matter in the decision-making process.

There is a small window left for us to raise our voices, but only if we all see the issue. Too many seem to feel better by keeping their heads in the sand rather than looking up and seeing the small number of hands controlling our fate.

The Map

Leopold Aschenbrenner mapped it plainly. He describes the drone swarms and roboarmies to come, a military that no longer needs the mass of humans who once had to be convinced to fight. Whoever controls it, he writes, “will quite possibly have enough power to seize control from pre-superintelligence forces,” and in a world of private labs racing to build it, individual CEOs “would have the power to literally coup the US government.”

There will be no one to persuade, no one to convince in the public. The public, already blind to the power AI wields, will only have a sense that something feels off. The loss of facts, the loss of common connection, and the fading belief that we the people have a say in our fate.

What happens to a civilization when it builds the first machine that runs faster than all three brakes at once? You can feel it already, the ping-pong of our leaders vying for control of the system. They are thinking not of us, but only of staying above those below them.

Tyranny needed people to enforce its will, and that is what’s being quietly dismantled. Not with a discussion with the public, but with a product.

And most of us won’t see it, because we’ll be looking at the chatbot in our hands and missing what’s happening behind it. That machine isn’t coming. It’s already here, and it’s already writing the world you live in. It even helped me write this.

That machine exists now. Let me show you where it already is.
